My Adventure in the Hidden World

The trilogy of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise has come to an end but not without  going out with a bang.   I was invited to Norway for a pretty magical press junket and while there I set out on a search for Dragons!

A team of amazing individuals from around the world gathered together in Norway ready for an adventure.  I have been on plenty of press trips/events but this one was different!  It was nothing short of spectacular – the team at Universal Studios out did themselves.  Each time I thought to myself that it could not get any better…….well it did!

On the hunt for Dragons I found the magic of Flam.  A small town with a population of 450 people but over a million tourists coming through on a yearly basis.  Each morning when I woke up and looked out my window there was a cruise ship docked with excited tourists streaming into town to see all that Flam had to offer.   The town had a bakery with the best honey buns that I have EVER had and the Ægir brewpub which had me going back to ensure I could bring some beer home!

Our itinerary was busy so I strapped on my hiking boots, grabbed my parka (because yes, the mountains are cold!) and off I went.  Our first stop had me a little anxious as it was my first Stand Up in front of camera for this type of trip.  Luckily I had made some swift friendships that pumped me up as we stood on top of the mountain.  The views from the Stegastein viewpoint were like nothing I have ever seen before, the drive back down the mountain may have had me closing my eyes here and there! It didn’t take long for me to understand why we had all travelled to Norway to celebrate Toothless, Hiccup and his friends.

The trip to the Flam Zipline was aboard the Flamsbana train up the mountain.  Nothing like a train ride up a mountain to get the momentum built for a zipline 305 metres off the ground and 1380 metres long!  Did I mention it is a little chilly up in the mountains?  This zipline was really great because you are in a sitting harness comfortable and allows you to enjoy the view all around you on your way down.  When I reached the base of the zipline I was met by Thor – yes I said Thor who offered us coffee and treats and answered my millions of questions.  It turned out that he worked for the Brewery I mentioned earlier, no wonder I like the guy 😉

My experience at the Viking Valley Village is a moment that will be with me forever.  We were welcomed with music and a greeting from their chief that brought me to tears.  For those of you that know me you know that I am a bit of a crier.  I was just grateful really.  We made our way through the village throwing axes, shooting arrows, baking bread and making hooks with the blacksmith.  These people welcomed us into their homes, showing us how they lived and shared their personal stories.

Our friends from Viking Valley then took us to the White Caves where we found the Hidden World and Toothless 😉  We dined at tables lit by candles right in the caves.  It was truly breathtaking!

Being able to talk with Dean DeBlois  (Director) and Jay Baruchel (Hiccup) was a fun interview!  As it was my first movie junket I was a little nervous but if you put 3 Canadians in a room it is bound to be a good time, am I right?  I was assured that How To Train Your Dragon, the Hidden World is in fact the last movie and last time that we will see Hiccup and Toothless and that they are both happy with how the movie ended the story.  I hope you enjoy my interview with them below:

The How To Train Your Dragon series is full of important and poignant lessons for children and adults!  No Spoilers here, but the ending is happy for humans and dragons alike!  The Blu-Ray is available for purchase on May 21st – make a date with your family for the perfect movie night.  I hear that Toothless likes popcorn.
