Protecting Yourself Online – Tips from ESET GIVEAWAY

I remember when I first signed up for Facebook – it was pretty exciting. My friends list was quickly growing which was neat.  My old neighbor, the guy from my tenth grade math class, a girl I did little theater with.  I was able to reconnect with all of these people which was great, right? Here's the thing – although it is neat to reconnect with people – they really aren't your "friends" and you just don't know who they are or what they do.  Your online safety is super important so let's talk about how to keep you safe.

When it comes to Facebook Privacy it can be kind of confusing.  You have the option to control who see's what which is fantastic but it isn't exactly easy to find.  ESET has put together a fantastic guide for Facebook Privacy Guidelines – you should definitely check it out HERE

Facebook Safety Tips:

  • Children under the age of 13 should not be on Facebook and those that are on should have very strict Privacy settings
  • Don't give too much away in your "About" Profile – the more you say the easier for a predator to attempt an identity theft
  • Keep private stuff private – you have the option to control your privacy on Facebook – USE IT
  • If you don't want to be '"tagged" in other peoples pictures etc. you don't have to be – change your settings under Timeline & Tagging.
  • Who can access your personal data – this is super important as you can control what third parties have access to your Facebook Profile.

I have recently done some housekeeping of my Facebook "Friends".  It's ok to do some trimming of people that you don't need on your list or to be sure that people have the correct privacy settings.

Now when it comes to twitter the spammers try to be tricky!  You can get Direct Messages saying strange things like they found a picture of you, or someone wrote a really great post about you and a link.  The best rule to follow is not to click on any link of someone in your Direct Messages that you don't know.  Or if it is just so strange like the ones above.

ESET has come out with a FREE tool that scans your Facebook and Twitter, it will go through your timeline, messages and newsfeed looking for malicious objects.  Be sure to check that out HERE

My last little tip is to change your passwords – and often 🙂

In the past month I have really learnt a great deal about keeping myself, my family and my computer safe from the dangers that are out there.  It is a totally user friendly program and I definitely recommend it.

Disclosure – I am a part of the PTPA Media ESET Security Ambassador Program.  I was provided with the program and compensation but as always all opinions are my own.

My sister unknowingly purchased a gown from a fraudelent site. They took all of her credit card information and charged the account extraneous amounts of money. The reality of online security is that people are out there looking for easy prey, and we all need to be extremely cautious.

To many people looking to gain access to your personal Info. It’s to easy nowadays. I have a little boy and Nieces and nephews all online…not my son yet but he will be one day and with all the dirtbags online it’s just to easy to gain access to someone’s computer and gain trust of a little child and get access to their schools their clubs, their sports…everything about them. Status updates, bored moms at work no ones home but me….it’s every parents nightmare. I’m terrified of the day my son asks for whatever social network will be next by the time he will be of age but I’d ensure every single precaution is taken before that day comes.
