$40 Christmas Dinner for 8 with Walmart Canada

The holidays are coming up fast and furious with planning in full swing. If you’re like me, you like to have your house full of friends, family and (of course) FOOD!  What if I told you that I could help you plan a holiday meal for $40?  Would you believe me?!

A few weeks ago, Walmart asked me if I could come up with a holiday meal to feed eight people for $40, and although I am ALWAYS up for a good challenge, I really thought hard about how I was going to do this. Being totally honest with you, it was easier than you would think. I was able to put together a beautiful meal for just over $40…$40.75 to be exact.

Here are a few tips when you are thinking about meal planning for your holiday meals:

  1. Ask around: I went to my friends, family and Facebook friends asking them what are their tried and true recipes on a budget. People had fantastic recommendations.
  2. Make a list and stick to it: Do all your pre-planning when you are at home so that when you arrive at the store you are not buying too much, while sticking to a budget.  Especially this time of year!  This is the list that I used for my meal.

  1. Have an open mind: You don’t always have to have a turkey and mashed potatoes at every single holiday meal. For meat, why not swap in a ham or whole chicken? We also did a really yummy sweet potato dish, a soup and casserole.

untitled-design-7I love cooking ham because it’s so darn easy.  Walmart's Our Finest brand has pre-seasoned hickory smoked sliced ham. All I did was pop it into my slow cooker for three hours on low heat.  For the last hour, I poured the seasoning over the ham and that was it.  It smells amazing and also frees up precious oven space that you need for your side dishes.

I want to share a couple of the recipes we used.

I thought we would start off with a yummy soup that only cost around $5 to make, and we had leftovers, which is nice for lunch on chilly days.curried-sweet-potato-wedges-1

I got this great recipe from the Walmart Live Better Magazine and I thought that it was a perfect substitute for mashed potatoes and they were a HUGE hit with the kids.

Lastly, I love a good casserole – not only because they are a family favourite and easy to make! Throw in as many or as little veggies as you want.

We rounded out the meal with a green salad and some dinner rolls. For dessert we made our own cupcakes, which got the kids involved in the meal. And there you have it, a holiday meal for $40 with the help from Walmart!

I must also add that Walmart has the most beautiful Christmas dishes. Every dish that was used came from their holiday line, I just couldn't’t resist.

What will you be making over the holidays?  Do you have any amazing recipes I should try? I would love to hear about them!
